No more 'Enemy Combatants'

by Mar Matthias Darin

Hide the kids and lock up the old folks! Its rant time!

The New York Times reported in an article,

The Obama administration said Friday that it would abandon the Bush administration's term "enemy combatant" as it argues in court for the continued detention of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in a move that seemed intended to symbolically separate the new administration from Bush detention policies.

So, someone from the opposing army in a war on the battlefield is no longer an "enemy combatant"... Well, what the hell are they then??? That person certainly wouldn't be my best friend or tea time partner and I most assuredly wouldn't invite this type of person to a game of golf or chess or to have dinner with my family.

This is nothing more than absolute political correctness crap. Anyone that trys to shoot my ass is an enemy and anyone on a battlefield is a combatant.

The English language really is very easy to learn and use... Honestly, it is... as long as the damned politically correct police leave it the hell alone and stops trying to twist it to fit their whacked out pathetic ideologies.

Absolutely spot on with your post. Using semantics for political gain, as our President is doing, is reprehensible

I never feel safe with dems in power. They are the weakest link ever. Thanks for saying exactly what I've been thinking about this issue.

Have a terrific day. :)

Okay, let me see if I can clear this up a bit. You are correct, if they oppose you on the battlefield, they are both the enemy and a combatant. But the term refers not to actions on the battlefied but what do you call the person once you have captured them. When a person from the opposite side is captured while fighting for a country, in that country's uniform, they are call a Prisoner of War (POW) and should be afforded all rights under the Geneva Conventions for treatment of enemy prisoners. But the Geneva Convention does not apply to those who are fighting for group, not a country, and therefore are not signatures of the Geneva Convention, and do not wear a uniform. So there is no term for that person. The correct term would be Enemy Combatant and not POW from X country. The Obama adminstration is making a huge mistake here. What are they going to call them? Since they are fighting for a terrorist organization (i.e. Al Qaeda or the Taliban), they are not covered under the Geneva Convention and thus can't be called POWs. The next option is criminal. But that doesn't quite cover it. The next problem is how to deal with them. Since they are not US citizens or legal resident aliens, the US Constitution does not apply to them either. If you believe that it does, try going to Afghanistan and using the US Constitution in their court, or in any other country for that matter. So they cannot be afforded Maranda Rights and other Bill of Rights rights. If you still believe the Constitution applies, then you have to believe it applied everywhere in the world and to anyone regardless of citizenship. Agian, try that in another country. So what do you call someone who you captured on a battlefield, does not fight in the uniform of an actual country, and thus cannot be a signature of the Geneva Convention?

An ENEMY COMBATANT!!

Joe: Thank you.

Comedy Plus: You're welcome.

Raider Steve: I think you might want to simply that... Somehow I don't think the Obama administration or liberal loonies are going to understand that... Especially the part on giving the terrorists legal rights under OUR constitution when they're NOT our citizens.

You are right, they will never understand that. I crossed posted my comments here at The Bobo Files (that is how I came to your blog; The Bobo and I served together in the Air Force). Take a look at the response I got over there.
