An award and an AFTR update by Mar Matthias Darin

First and foremost, Windmill has bestowed upon me the Passionate Blogger award:

Thank you, Windmill, it is greatly appreciated.

Next, a second full test system has been put into Along for the Ride! rotation. Many thanks to Get off the Couch News for being brave and running my experimental code. Most of the bugs seem to be gone, but more test systems are needed. One surprise that I wasn't expecting has been the amount of traffic generated (excluding my testing). I am quite happy that Along for the Ride has done so well this early.

Along for the Ride! (AFTR) is completely button based now. The AFTR box is in my right column.

The rules for joining are as such:

  • Relatively family safe. Relatively best describes blogs like mine that are 99% safe with the 1% not safe (but with warnings if needed)
  • No pop-ups, pop-unders
  • No auto-playing music or videos
  • No porn, nudity, hate, or racism
  • Nothing illegal (no warez, virus, guns, drugs, etc...)
  • No Ads only blogs
  • Blogs must be updated at least once a week
  • At least 12 articles on the blog
  • All member sites must have the Along for the Ride! javascript code on the page.
  • Rules will be adjusted to compensate for anything I missed.

If you are interested in helping my test and perfect AFTR, add the following code to your blog:

<script type="text/javascript" src="http://matthiaschronicles.tanaya.net/AFTR/aftr.xjs"></script>

Be sure to leave a comment with your blog url that the code is on and email address so I can contact you if needed. Note, I never give out email addresses or any other personal information.

Thank you.

Hi Matthias, I added the button with no problem. It loads a little slowly, just so you know.

This is a great idea. Thanks for letting me beta test. Carol

Thank you. I'm working on the load time, but it is mostly limited to the website that is loading.

It's still not working for me. Any ideas?

Comments from Mar Matthias Darin

sharkbytes: How is it not working? I've been to your site several times to test it and it seems to be running perfectly. Do you have your browser set to allow cookies? Cookies are required for session purposes and can be deleted at the end of the session or when you close your browser.

As of my last check, (3:28pm CST), its working very well. I loaded the script several times by repeatedly opening your site and mousing over the AFTR box. My logs for today show 20+ hits from your site. What are you experiencing on your side?

Comments from Lea 75.101.83.22

Hi Bobby

I put the code on my side bar. Works great except my video overlaps the site from the mouseover popup.

Instead of the popup displaying the site on top of the video in my post, it is behind it. I was still able to see the site in the popup, but the open link was obscured by the video in my post. Which prevents anyone from going directly to that site.

Unfortunately, I am doing a series of videos right now. Any suggestions?

Comments from Mar Matthias Darin

Lea: Thats not a problem at all. Ita actually very easy to work around. When your page loaded, I just scrolled your page until the AFTR box was at the bottom of the screen. The mini-window shows up fine. Plus there are ways to rotate the flash back a layer from the base layer without any changes to the page.

Your site is in the rotation. Thank you.

Hi - I have checked out the button several times so far. I'm not sure if it's my PC but it only allows a few seconds glimpse at a blog so I am a little uncertain about it. I'll keep checking it out to see whether this is something to do with our Broadband provider or not.

Thanks for the invite to "Along for the Ride!"- I have put the code on my blog and I can't wait to see how it goes!

Polly: Try the new widget, the issues you are having have been fixed.
