The plentiful feast

by Mar Matthias Darin

I pray everyone had a bountiful feast for Christmas and has one for New Years day.

My family and I have been blessed with plenty and do not go hungry. Sadly though, at one time, that wasn't the case. Food was more valuable then the most precious jewels. We still consider it as such. Millions of people world wide are not as blessed as we have been. World starvation and starvation especially in United States in a national disgrace.

I single out the Unites States because we are one of the most prosperous nations in the world. No child in this nation should go hungry, especially during the holiday season. Yet hundreds of thousands in our own country do. Why? With all the food this country wastes and throws away, why does anyone in this country face starvation?

Convenience stores across America throw out food on a weekly basis that is still within the expiration date and untouched by anyone. During the holidays, feasts that a king would marvel over are prepared. Food that could easily last a week with left overs is tossed into the trash after only one night's feast. Why? If restaurants and stores took all the perfectly safe and untouched food that is wasted so frivolously to missions and food pantries, there would not be a single starving person in this entire country.

Why is it that a nation as blessed as ours can not come together and, rather then throwing away hundreds of millions on tons of food, does not figure out ways to take this food to those who have none? Why is it that the people in this great nation of ours who have the most are the very people that waste the most with little thought or consideration of those less fortunate?

I will never understand such selfishness and why such people seem to take delight in another person's anguish and watching them suffer... Perhaps thats why I will never be rich... I could never watch a person starve knowing I had more then enough to share...

I have wondered why people will donate money to help people, especially children, in other countries while ignoring the needs of our own poor.

I am particularly concerned about jobs that are outsourced to other countries when our own people need jobs so badly. People cannot survive without jobs, more and more are having to go on government assistance. The US needs to rethink their globalization agreements and protect it's citizens.

I agree with you 100%! Definitely a shame to waste perfectly good food, especially when other people are going hungry.

Richness should be divided but no, there´s allways the very rich and the very poor, it´s a shame. A Prosperous 2009! All the best. Mizé.
