2009 is going to be a good year

by Mar Matthias Darin

Christmas has certainly brought many bountiful blessings for me this year.

Above all, I'm still alive. That may not seem like much to many, but for me its a milestone. I should be dead already, so my doctors keep telling me. They say my disability should have killed me by now. Yet, here I sit, staring into a new year, wondering what will come, while I'm typing this post.

How will the world change in this coming year? Will this economic crises be the next "Great Depression"? I doubt it, but I'm no fortune teller. Will the jobless and homeless rates climb? Unfortunately and sadly, most likely they will both continue to climb... Our government will continue to be ran by idiots, a new batch of idiots, but still idiots... Crime and suicide rates will, too, continue to climb as well...

None-the-less, it will be a good year. Some may be asking how can I sit here and say 2009 is going to be a good year?" Especially if you are one of the many that lost your job or home... I'm not being cold or callous and I live on a very limited income with quite a few bills going into 2009. I'm not immune to the rising prices of goods and services and I'm not one of the many bishops where the church pays my way. I'm a (forced) retired working bishop and I've spent many a day with an empty belly and no food in my lifetime. So I do understand the hardships that have befallen many people.

How then can 2009 be a good year?

Because I'm still alive. However small my role in the universe is, I can still reach out and help someone less fortunate then I am, simply because I'm still alive.

And that, my friend, is a definite milestone. Take good care of yourself!

I appreciate your positive attitude, and wish you well in the coming year.

I was raised by a mom that held the same attitude! Every day that she awoke ... was a birthday to her. My mom had polio as a child, spending more than a year in an iron lung to keep her alive. Somehow she survived the disease and even had three children and a long happy marriage. Each morning was a blessing to her ... and she gave that gift of gratitude to me, her daughter!

P.S. I'm glad your alive, too! Best Wishes in 2009 :-)

I think the message in your words is that the coming year can be a good year for anyone if they choose to look at it that way. You could choose to see the problems you have, whether they be health, monetary, career or any other, yet you choose to think positively (that it will be a good year because you are alive). I think more people should learn from your example and find a reason to believe the coming year will be good for them instead of focusing on why it might be a bad year.

I wish you a very healthy, happy and prosperous new year!

You are indeed right. Optimism is all that we mortals have left in face of the uncertainties that lie in the immediate precarious future.
