Looking back while thinking forward

by Mar Matthias Darin

This is somewhat of a dual post... Windmill of Windmill on the Hill must have known some how that I have been thinking about the future of this blog. Don't worry, I ain't falling off the edge of the world...

I have been thinking about this past year and how far this blog has come. Whether or not I should continue of my hap-hazard posting style or if I should make a more deliberate effort in some structured approach...

As I was saying, Windmill some how knew what was going through my head as he awarded me with this:

Thank you, Windmill, for the award. I am very appreciative.

What ties this post to the uncanniness of receiving this award? Simply put, some of the requirements to qualify for the award have been the very things that have weighed on my mind:

This Award is presented to bloggers who display consistency in any one or a combination of these conditions:

  • The Blogger manifests exemplary attitude, respecting the nuances that pervades amongst different cultures and beliefs.
  • The Blog contents inspire; strives to encourage and offers solutions.
  • There is a clear purpose at the Blog; one that fosters a better understanding on Social, Political, Economic, the Arts, Culture and Sciences and Beliefs.
  • The Blog is refreshing and creative.
  • The Blogger promotes friendship and positive thinking..

Where did this blog start and where is it going?

When I started this blog, I had in mind a place that I could vent my frustrations about some of the more difficult aspects of our society. I really never thought about how this blog would leave the boundaries of my venting and actually reach people at a different level. Though it has and I've met some very nice people, many of which would never sit and the same table with me because our views and beliefs are so different.

Ironically, I have had many conversations and debates with people that I normally wouldn't agree to disagree with. I have made lasting friendships through this blog and have discussed a myriad of topics that are a daily part of my life. Issues like Torture, Gays and marriage, Christians and abortion, and H.R. 1424, the bail out bill, are just a few, not to mention the many guest posts that have appeared on this blog.

I never imagined that my wild thinking would ever appeal to the many diverse people that have visited. For me, the success of this blog was and is best measured by the many responses I have received.

When I first was thinking about even starting this blog, I was told by many bloggers, who have been around for quite a while, that I shouldn't be disappointed or depressed if I didn't get comments right away. This was because my perspective audience will need time to figure out who I am as a writer and my thinking process behind what I write.

I started getting responses rather quickly, surprising even myself. In a country that has gone secular progressive liberal in many ways, my progressive conservative approach had an appeal. I have to admit that I am ecstatic and humbled by the success I have achieved and all the more resolved to continue this blog. In thinking about this blog's future, I pretty much have no plans to change its direction. I think the appeal lies in the random and unpredictable approach I have taken.

A lot of blogs cover today's new and hot topics. I don't always respond to these and when I do, never in sync with the mass blogosphere. Perhaps that too adds to the mystique of the atmosphere for this blog. All the experts say you should always reproduce what make you successful in order to stay successful. I'm really not sure what made this blog a success and I can't say I've had any failed posts, since my method of success is not based on how much money I make or how many advertisers I attract. I've measured my success by the quality of the responses I've received and by the friends I have made.

In accepting this award, Windmill listed the following requirements for the award: 1. Create a Post with a mention and link to the person who presented the Noblesse Oblige Award. 2. The Award Conditions must be displayed at the Post. 3. Write a short article about what the Blog has thus far achieved - preferably citing one or more older Post to support. 4. The Blogger must present the Noblesse Oblige Award in concurrence with the Award conditions. 5. The Blogger must display the Award at any location at the Blog.

I think I actually covered more then the requirements for the award. For me though, this blog is more then awards, its a part of me and a reflection of the world around me and probably a tad bit of rambling as well...

Congrats on your award...on being recongized as 'above the fray'...I understand the constant self questioning as to 'why am I doing this'..but, clearly, you have something to say, and this is a very good platform.

Wishing you and your family blessings and good health for Christmas and the New Year!

Congratulations on the award. I must admit that for the longest time I merely dropped on your blog but recently have actually started to read! I will make a habit of coming back and adding my two cents worth on occasion. In the meantime, best regards for this holiday season.
