Christians and abortion

by Mar Matthias Darin

This election has brought out a group of people claiming that the Bible and Christ's teachings condone abortion. As Biden and Pelosi quickly found out, the Christian belief system does NOT tolerate abortion as clearly stated by the Archbishop of Colorado and by the Pope himself. This is one of the few areas I actually agree with Catholicism.

I'm going to cover this issue from both a Christian and a scientific/medical standpoint. I know this will peave off all the Obamatrons, liberals, and pro-choice followers... Nothing new there... They'll get over themselves, and if they can't - too bad. Its time for a serious dose of reality. Its called responsibility and consequences for one's actions, something this group tries to blame everyone else for except themselves.

First and foremost, lets start with a hard line definition in the strictest, and most literal context of Scripture: What is a Christian? A Christian is a Christ centered individual. That being stated, anyone who is not Christ centered is not a Christian and is one of more of the following: a false christian, a deceiver, and a wolf in sheep's clothing. Scripture often refers to this group, any non-Christ center person, as a heathen. There's no middle ground in this definition. Christianity revolves around Jesus Christ, Son of the Living GOD, the Father Almighty. Christianity does not revolve around Paul, Peter, Thomas, of any other Apostle, no matter how much these sects wish it to be so.

This definition is so precise because Jesus Christ raised the standards. These standards are what we, as true Christ centered believers, are to follow:

The Peshitta
Verse
King James Version
Enter in through the narrow door, for wide is the door, and broad is the road which carries to destruction, and many are those who travel on it.
7:13
Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:
O how narrow is the door, and how difficult is the road which carries to life, and few are those who are found on it.
7:14
Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

Now lets look as the part of Scripture where Jesus teaches a parable:

The Peshitta
Verse
King James Version
Do you not know that what enters into the mouth goes into the stomach, and thence, through the intestines, is cast out?
15:17
Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught?
But what comes out of the mouth comes out from the heart; and that is what defiles man.
15:18
But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.
For from the heart come out evil thoughts, such as fornication, murder, adultery, theft, false witness, blasphemy.
15:19
For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:
It is these that defile man; but if a man should eat when his hands are unwashed, he will not be defiled.
15:20
These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man.

This section is important because is gives another, more complex, definition to murder as well as fornication, adultery, theft, lieing and blasphemy. Here Jesus states that by speaking of murder, even with out committing the act of murder, a person has in fact committed (spiritual) murder. Why are these two passages so important to a Christ centered person? Simple, it is here that we are told that abortion is murder.

Murder is defined as the killing of one human by another, especially with premeditated malice.

Abortion is defined as an intentional interruption of the development process, at any time from conception to birth.

It is important that we note that the definition of murder does not exclude an unborn fetus. Also note the emphasis on premeditation. Abortion is a highly planed act. It just doesn't happen and a lot of forethought goes into the process.

Now lets look at the scientific and medical aspect. We, as human beings, consider ourselves living, breathing creatures. As such, every cell in our body is alive. A fetus is nothing more than an extension of a woman's body until birth. It draws life giving nutrients though the placenta to grow and develop. Now consider this, if the woman that is carrying the fetus is alive and the fetus is connected to her via the placenta and growing, wouldn't the definition of life also pertain to the fetus? The answer is yes, of course. The fetus is just as much alive as the heart, kidneys, lungs, or any other organ receiving blood through the veins and arteries.

Abortion can be nothing other then premeditated murder. The rational that a woman can do what ever she wants to her body is absolute nonsense. Our society locks people up with self destructive tendencies. The double standards employed to justify abortion are absolutely sickening. Abortion is and always will be legalized premeditated murder. When society starts clouding the fundamental definition of life, it is playing with a very dangerous bomb. By allowing abortion, society opens the door to allowing infanticide and genocide. We have already experienced this destructiveness in our history: the Nazi death camps.

Going back to the main point here, anyone who supports abortion is not a Christ centered person (a true Christian) and is in the strictest context, a false prophet, a deceiver, or a wolf in sheep's clothing. Scripturally speaking, they are a heathen. Therefore, all of the Obamatrons, Obama himself, the pro-choice followers and anyone that supports abortion are heathens.

The facts are plain and clear, no matter how this heathenistic group of people try to spin it - they are murderers and will be judged accordingly. With that being said, we must be careful NOT to condemn the person. Only GOD has that right as HE truly knows what the lies in the heart. We can only condemn the act of abortion.

They always want to frame the abortion argument as "a woman's right to choose."

They also want to say that it is not yet a baby, but a fetus.

Essentially, abortion is nothing more than another form of birth control.

No matter the circumstances, instead of murdering the baby, how about giving it up for adoption.

Well said Matthias. Sadly our current president talked a good game and did little on this issue. I am not sure either of the two men running will move to protect life while he is in office.

I know a woman who had 2 abortions. Today, many years later, she often sits and wonders about what could have been. She beats herself up over it. I understand this is not uncommon.

PaulsHealthBlog: Agreed. Adoption is a better way to deal with an unwanted pregnancy. I believe then their guilt would surface as they faced their child and the realization that a living, breathing life was growing in them for nine months would hit home. Its not so easy to commit murder (for a person who has a conscience) when there is a face to see and smile back.

carol: Thank you. Obama is liberal pro-choice and McCain is conservative pro-life.

Joe: I have encountered this as well. The guilt can be very consuming and destructive.

What about the scriptures where God himself performed and told others to perform abortions?

Hosea 9:11-16 “Ephraim shall bring forth his children to the murderer. Give them, 0 Lord: what wilt thou give? Give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts. . .Ephraim is smitten, their root is dried up, they shall bear no fruit: yea though they bring forth, yet will I slay even the beloved fruit of their womb.”

Hosea 13:16 God promises to dash to pieces the infants of Samaria and the “their women with child shall be ripped up”.

Numbers 5:11-21

Numbers 31:17

2 Kings 15:16 God allows the pregnant women of Tappuah (aka Tiphsah) to be “ripped open”.

Kat: The teaching Jesus gave to his followers, now Christians, supercede all teaching of the Old Testament. Abortion was acceptable in the Old Testament but Jesus made it clear that Christians are held to a higher standard then the old laws:

Mark 2:21-22 No man puts a new patch and sews it on a worn out garment, so that the new patch may not weaken the old, and the hole be come larger. And no man pours new wine into old wine-skins, so that the wine may not rend the skins and the skins be ruined, and the wine run out; but they pour new wine into new wine-skins.

Simply put, Christians can't follow old ways when its a matter of convience. Christ came after the Old Testament, was given total authority by GOD, the Father Almight, and we, as true Christ centered people, are epected to hold to the higher standards Christ set.

I already knew what your answer was going to be, new testament laws wipe out old testament laws, JC is the supreme ruler, all the power and authority given to him by God, and he, JC, says thou shall not kill.

Maybe you can answer this for me, no one else has ever been able to give me full scripture and verse on this, so I'm wondering if you can.

Where in the bible, new testament I'm going to assume, does it say that we should ignore/put aside/whatever terms you want to use, all the teachings and lessons of the old testament? What verse(s) specifically, tell us to put aside all of the teachings and laws of God, the father almighty, from the old testament? I really want to know where it says that we should only follow the new testament, and not the old.

See, because every time this subject comes up, I'm told that JC says he holds us to higher standards, to the new testament laws, or that the old testament was God speaking in metaphors, not really what he said or did, nobody was killed, it was all a metaphor. But, when people want to prove that intelligent design is true, they want to use the old testament, Genesis and others, to prove that God created dinosaurs and other stuff. In other words, they want to use both books when it's convenient for them to use both.

So really, I want to know where in the new testament it says we are only to follow the teachings of JC, his new laws, higher standards than his Father, God almighty, and that the old testament is basically null and void because JC said so.

But I am actually glad that you admitted abortions were done and acceptable in the old testament. You are the very first preacher I've spoken with who has admitted that it did happen. Every one else says that it didn't happen, God spoke in metaphors, and that the old testament is voided after JC was born and died for us. So thanks for admitting that God did condone and perform abortions in the old testament.

Kat: The above, also echoed in Luke says that we can not follow the old jewish ways and Christ's ways. It is a parable. We are not to throw out the Old testament as it shows why Jesus' death was so important. His death was the final sacrifice. Jews still seek to sacrafice for their sins. Christians do not. We are to cast away the old ways for the ways Jesus teaches. The Old Testament was a very violent time and many thousands of people died. Noah's flood has been recorded by many different cultures indicating that is was very real and so was the death count. Archaeology has clearly proven this. Was this horrid violence GOD's will? I would have to say probably not. It is important to remember that the Old Testament was written by mere men, like the New Testament. There are going to be social influences that impact all of the works. The only way we know that Jesus did not advocate violence in any way is be comparing the history of the Romans and other cultures through Biblical Archaeology. We find that the accounts of Jesus are accurate about Him being against violence. The Old Testament servers as a harsh reminder filled with many lessons of what happens when we are without faith and trust only ourselves.

I can't say that GOD condoned abortions, but there is enough evidence to say the Jews did. Where did the Jews get this belief is uncertain and still the subject of great debate among scholars. I can say for fact the Jesus does not condone abortion and Christians are not to practice Jewish rites and rituals.

Thank you very much for answering all of my questions for me, I really do appreciate that you took the time to do that. I hope you understand that I was not trying to be combative, but to really get an understanding of this because as I said, no one has ever answered me in full, or has said that all of the old testament was a metaphor.

Thank you, I really do appreciate it.

Kat: There is a passage, just can't remember where at the moment, Where Jesus explicitly tells His followers to throw off the old raiment. I didn't think you combative at all. I have had many discussions with other clergy that simply do not understand Biblical History, which has had the same turmoils as regular history, where it changes at times. There are a few Bibles that clearly show the influences on the period they were written in. So I do understand just how frustating the Old Testament can be. Rest assured, the Ole Testament is not a metaphor, but historically based on real events. The question really is how much has time faded or skewed the historical events. This is where Biblical Archaeology often sets the record straight when historical events comes into question. Thus far, such scientific scrutiny has proven the Bible a fairly accurate account of the history involved.
