Along for the Ride! (AFTR) is an innovative
approach to traffic sharing. That's right, traffic sharing.
AFTR is not a traffic exchange and there are no incentives for visitors
to interact with AFTR unless they want to so all visitors that
come from and through AFTR are high quality and targeted.
AFTR sites (blogs or forums) are classified in
two ways, the hosting site and the receiving site. Every AFTR member
falls into both categories.
As a hosting site, an AFTR member displays
the AFTR box or is embedded into the hosting site via its script. The
hosting site's visitors can then (at their choice) mouse over or click
the AFTR box and they will see another AFTR member site in a mini
window. No interaction is required with the embedded version. The
visitor can the browse the site in the mini window, open the site in the
mini window into a full sized window or tab. The hosting site remains on
the screen for the visitor to continue browsing and reading the content
they originally came for. The AFTR member site that was brought along
for the ride can then be viewed or bookmarked. For the AFTR member that
was brought along for the ride, there is the potential of a new reader
and exposure that they may not have otherwise received. Thus both sides
win. The hosting site has a new and unique feature to offer content to
its visitors and the receiving site gains traffic and exposure.
I built AFTR on the following premise:
C. S. Lewis drew us a mental picture of Hell,
everyone was seated at a banquet table filled with wonderful food. The
problem arose in that the food was several feet away, and they all had
three foot long forks and knives. They could just reach the food, but
the utensils were too long to get the food into their mouths. There was
anger, fighting, screaming and unpleasantness abounding. Think of the
expansion of Moreso's law for eternity.
Lewis also drew us a picture of Heaven, same
huge banquet table filled with wonderful foods. The banqueters in Heaven
with equipped with those same three foot long utensils. The difference
was the joy, laughter, and excitement at the table; they were feeding
each other, and enjoying a great feast. They had learned the joy of
service on earth, and now they had eternity to enjoy it, only more so.
With C.S Lewis' picture in mind, any and
every click exchange would be hell. You spend countless hours clicking
on little boxes or random numbers and get very little satisfaction and
even fewer visitors. With the same picture in mind, you put AFTR on your
blog and forget about it. People seem to just come - C.S. Lewis'
picture of Heaven.
If you are GIVING AWAY your traffic, how are
you getting traffic?
That's the revolutionary thinking behind
AFTR. Every time someone visits your blog and interacts with AFTR,
another blog from the AFTR members list that is displayed in the AFTR
widget and receives a visitor or a hit . You receive nothing, not even
a credit. AFTR was designed for the visitor, not the blog owner,
completely opposite to every click exchange. Your blog will receive
visitors from other AFTR members using the exact same sharing method.
Here are the official rules:
- Site must be a blog or a forum.
- Relatively family safe. Relatively best describes blogs like mine
that are 99% safe with the 1% not safe (but with warnings if needed)
- No pop-ups, pop-unders
- No auto-playing music or videos
- No nudity. Important note: some sites, like those dealing with
abuse, may have adult oriented discussions not suitable for children.
These blogs are forced to Class 2.
- No porn, hate, or racism
- Nothing illegal (no warez, virus, guns, drugs, etc...)
- No Ads only blogs
- No MLM (multi-level marketing), pyramid, ponzi or such type schemes
- Blogs/forums must be updated at least once a week. Blogs that go
over this limit will automatically, but temporarily, be removed from
rotation until the content is updated. This is done to keep AFTR fresh.
- RSS feed with date of last update. Description or article contents
are NOT required, only the date of the last article or when you last
updated the blog. This is used to verify that only blogs updated in the
last 7 days are in the rotation. See previous rule.
- All member sites must have the Along for the
Ride! javascript code on the page. See above note about
temporary removal.
- At least 12 articles/posts on the blog or forum
- All blogs must be in English. The only exception to this is if the blog uses
Google Translator and translation is easily and readily available on all pages.
- Rules will be adjusted to compensate for anything I missed.
- ICRA labels.
NOT required, but heavily recommended. The AFTR class robot will soon look for
this to fine tune blog classification.
Here is a live map showing statistics of the AFTR
widget loads (including the embed):
Click on each of the items below to the desired
widget type:
The AFTR mini-window is embedded into the hosting
page and only loads after the hosting page has completely
finished loading. This provides the greatest exposure for member
sites, however, it may not be suitable for all sites.
This widget is special and has a very specific purpose. Think of
this widget as a tour bus driving down a street filled with houses
(AFTR member blogs). The bus stops at a house and the passengers on
the bus can look through the windows of the house (view the member's
blog through the embed mini-window), get out of the bus and go into
the house (open the member's blog in a new window), or do absolutely
nothing (typical window shoppers).
This widget exposes visitors to content they most likely would
never know about or see. It is at the bottom of the page because
market research (Google and other advertising companies) suggests
that visitors often look for some where else to visit by the time
they reach the bottom of the page.
This method generates at least ten times the traffic compared to
the Click and MouseOver versions. The code goes at the bottom on
the page before the </body> tag and
is centered automatically. As some blogging platforms only allow a
"footer" section, the Embed widget is able to figure out where the
"true" bottom of the page is and sets itself there without damaging
or messing up your template.
To protect against "junk" traffic, this widget
does NOT display immediately. It waits for the hosting web page to
load completely (including all images, widgets and advertising) and
on fast loading blogs, it waits a minimum of one minute.
To see a preview, please scroll to the bottom of the page.
Here is the script:
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://matthiaschronicles.tanaya.net/AFTR/aftr.xjs?embed"></script>
or
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://matthiaschronicles.tanaya.net/AFTR/aftr.xjs?embed+aeaeff"></script>
In the second example above, the aeaeff is the default color that is used in the first example. You can change this to blend the Embed into your blog. Any six character color code can be used.

Member sites are scanned daily for the AFTR
widget. Sites that do not have the widget on them will be removed from
rotation automatically, Once the widget is put back on the site, it will
be added back into this list and rotation. Notification are sent if I
see a prolonged duration to sites as needed that have signed up for AFTR
but do not have the widget on their page.
The class or
designation of a site determines what sites are acceptable based upon
page scans. Class 1 sites are rated G rated. There are no questionable
or objectionable words on the site. Class 2 sites are the those may
have words that may be deemed onjectionable for minors, but yet still
proper in the context of that site. The method I use errs on the side
of caution as some words can be both clean in context and vulgar beyond
reason. Site class is evaluated each time my robot looks for the AFTR
widget and only checks the page that is shown to the visitor.
Class 1 will only show other class 1 sites.
Class 2 sites will show both classes. I went this way as and added
assurance to protect minors because it is very possible that a parental
warning may be missed or still objectionable to a class 1 site. Each
site in this area is extensively evaluated based upon its content and
AFTR member reactions. I heavily screen all blogs. Class 1 sites will
NEVER, EVER display Class 2 blogs. I AM ALWAYS VISITING EACH AND EVERY SITE IN THE AFTR
MEMBERSHIP AND RE-EVALUATING ITS CONTENT.
AFTR is free, so there's nothing to loose
and visitors to gain! Give it a try today!
